Tips for Beginner Hikers!

Hiking is a great way to get outside, explore the world around you, and get some exercise. Whether you’re heading out for a day hike or a multi-day backpacking trip, there are some tips that every beginner hiker should know. In this blog post, we’ll explore some essential tips for beginners to help you have a fun, safe, and enjoyable hiking experience.

Start with easy hikes: As a beginner, it's important to start with easy hikes that match your fitness level. Choose a trail that's well-maintained, has a gentle incline, and is relatively short in length. This will help you build your confidence, stamina and also get you familiar with the basics of hiking. I recommend checking out AllTrails to find trails near you. They have a great feature where you can sort by difficulty and length.

Research your route: Before heading out, do your research on the trail you’re planning to hike. Know the distance, the elevation gain, and the trail difficulty. Check the weather conditions and pack accordingly. Also, make sure you have a map or GPS device, so you don't get lost on the trail.

Wear appropriate clothing and footwear: Hiking can be physically demanding, so it's important to wear comfortable and appropriate clothing. Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics, layers, and comfortable hiking boots with good grip. Avoid cotton, which doesn't wick away moisture and can leave you feeling cold and damp.

Carry the 10 essentials: This article by REI does a great job explaining what the 10 essentials are and why you should carry them. Important ones to call out are: sun protection (a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen) and extra water! Please take the time to learn what the 10 essentials are..

Let someone know your plan: Before you head out on a hike, always tell someone where you are hiking, how long the hike is, and what time they should expect to hear from you. If something were to happen, it’s important that someone knows where you are. Alltrails also has estimates on how long a hike will take. Don’t forget to check back in when you return home!

Leave No Trace: This includes staying on trails, packing out your trash, and being respectful of other visitors. Learn more here.
