Here are a couple of things to keep in mind when picking out fall hiking clothes:

  1. Ditch the cotton. Once cotton is wet, it doesn’t dry! It’s best to avoid cotton and opt for moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabrics like polyester, merino wool, and nylon.

  2. Layering is key. Wear (and pack) lightweight, breathable layers that can be easily added or removed to adjust to changing weather conditions. Temperatures can vary wildly in the fall, so make sure to pack a mix of warmer and cooler clothing options. Don’t forget to pack a rain jacket and a warmer jacket (like a puffy jacket).

  3. Make sure you’re comfortable. Opt for hiking clothes that are flexible and allow for a full range of motion. Also, your clothes are meant to fit you- not the other way around. If you need to buy new clothing to fit your body- do so.

  4. Your shoes matter. The truth is, you don’t need to buy expensive clothing and gear to go hiking. However, investing in a good pair of hiking shoes can truly make a big difference!

My Favorite Fall Footwear:

Blundstone Boots

Blundstones are a classic granola girl shoe. I love that they’re both super cute AND functional. When purchasing Blundstones, make sure you size up at least a half size as they run small. If you plan to wear warm, thick socks, I recommend sizing up a full size. I love that I can wear my Blundstones on short trails or out to dinner in town! I bought the Chelsea 550 and highly recommend them!

Merrell Moab 3

These are my favorite neutral hiking shoes. They’re supportive for long day hikes, have good traction, and look cute with all my hiking outfits. They’re also waterproof, which is great to have during the muddy season of fall or as a transitional hiking shoe into early winter.

Teva Reember Dupes!

I’m sure you’ve seen the super popular Teva Reembers… and maybe like me, you couldn’t justify spending $70 on a pair of slippers you’d quickly ruin/get smelly. I love these dupes I found on Amazon for over half the price! They’re a perfect camp shoe during the colder months.

My Favorite Fall Jackets & Shackets:

Inexpensive Puffy Jacket

This puffy jacket is a great addition to your fall wardrobe because it’s inexpensive, cute, and functional. I’ve bought this jacket in multiple colors and love wearing it around camp, in town, or when it’s not as cold. This puffy goes on sale frequently and can be a lot cheaper if you’re not super picky about the colorway. For longer hiking & backpacking, or in colder temperatures, I opt to wear my higher quality puffy jacket (below).

High Quality Puffy Jacket

I have two favorite high quality puffy jackets- the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer and the Patagonia Down Sweater. If you do a lot of outdoor adventuring, I think it’s worth it to invest in a high quality puffy because they’re generally warmer, pack down smaller, and move with you better.

My Favorite Fleece

I always bring a fleece on my fall adventures. It’s helpful to have a fleece to either layer with your puffy jacket or wear on its own. This fleece by Patagonia is popular for a reason. This fleece is functional and will keep you warm, but also looks cute on your camping trips, hikes, or adventures in the city.

Fall Flannels

Nothing says fall like a flannel! I love this inexpensive flannel and own it in a few different colors. It’s warm, cute, and brings all the fall vibes!
